Football Cake Pops

Football Cake Pops

I love watching football... well, college football anyway. And especially my favorite team, and alma mater, the University of Missouri.
I also think it's very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love, and the Mizzou love. So, giving them sweet things with a requirement that they complete the phrase 'M-I-Z'... with 'Z-O-U'... seems to work.
These football cake pops are super easy to make.

What You Need:
Cake, baked and cooled
1-2 cups icing
Light Cocoa Candy Meltss very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love Football Cake Pops (or chocolate almond bark)
White Candy Meltss very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love Football Cake Pops (or white almond bark)
Vegetable Oil
Lollipop Stickss very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love Football Cake Pops
Tall Mug
Optional:
Heating Pad
Squeeze Bottles very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love Football Cake Pops w/ Tip #1 or #2
Ice Pack

To make the football shapes, you need to crumble your cake into small crumbs, and add enough icing to allow the cake to stick together. I make the footballs a little larger than my regular cake pops, so I use two scoops from my 1 tsp. dough scoops very important to indoctrinate the children into the football love Football Cake Pops.

Roll the two of those into a compact ball. You can see the difference in the texture between the original scoops and the ball above.
*Note: I actually added too much icing to this batch of cake pops, so they look a little sticky. They are. Don't be me. Add the icing a little at a time. Working with cake pops that have too much icing in them is really a pain!

After you've shaped the ball, getting the 'dough' into a compact shape, then roll it into more of a cylinder shape.

If you haven't added too much icing, you may be able to further shape them into footballs by using your fingers to pinch the ends as you see above. If you did, like me, you can taper the ends, after you've refrigerated them.

Refrigerate your football shapes at least three hours or overnight.

When you're ready to dip, melt the chocolate candy in the microwave with about 1 Tbsp. of oil per bag of melts. I use power level 3, stopping to stir every 30 seconds. You never want the melts to get hot, just warm. They are ready when they are just melted.

To dip the footballs, always start by dipping your lollipop stick in the melted candy before you insert it into the shape. These footballs are a little more dicey to stab with the stick because they are so long and skinny. Be careful that you don't stick the stick all the way through the cake ball.
*Note, when it's warm in my kitchen, I use an ice pack underneath the plate of cake balls to keep them cool while I work. I also only work on about 5 cake pops at a time.

Dip the cake pop quickly in the chocolate, being careful not to twist it. If you need to get better coverage, lean the pop side to side. If you twist or twirl the stick, your cake pop can easily fall off of the stick.

Gently tap the stick against the side of the mug, holding the pop at an angle like you see above (stick below, pop above). This gets the extra candy off, and helps keep the big drips from forming on the cake pops.

Insert the stick into the styrofoam, and let the candy set- this only takes a few minutes.

To add the "laces," melt the white candy (without added oil) in a squeeze bottle. Using a tip #1 or #2, add the laces. (Or you can melt it in a disposable decorating bag. Or you can melt it in a bowl or mug and pour the only warm, not hot, candy into a freezer zip top bag to decorate.)

I had a hard time with mine cracking on these. I think my white candy was too warm. Be careful that you don't overheat your candy. And don't stick the pops back in the fridge between dipping them and adding the laces. That temperature difference will crack them, too.

Play Ball! (Oh, wait... that's baseball. Well, whatever.)

Fall Treats Roundup

Fall Treats Roundup

I'm just getting into the fall mood here, thanks to some unusually warm weather for the frozen tundra this time of year. So, a look back at some of my favorites from last year... and a couple from the last week, as well.

Pumpkin Cake Pops
I love these. They are one of my favorite treats to make.
You can watch me make them with Tom and Karen on Fox 9 in a few weeks.

Caramel Apple Cake
This cake is so tasty that I made the cupcake version this fall.

Caramel Apple Cupcakes
I bribed my kids' kindergarten teachers with these at the start of school.

Pumpkin Cheesecake Cake
SO. Rich. SO. Good!

Pretty Pumpkin Cake
Have I mentioned that I love my Pumpkin Cake Recipe?

Apple Cake Pops
These would be awesome if you used the Caramel Apple Cake recipe for the insides!

Football Cake Pops
Perfect for cheering on the newest member of the SEC!

Fall Leaf Cookies
I'm making some more of these this weekend.

Apple Cookies
Apples and Pumpkins... that's fall to me!

I've left out my Halloween treats from last year... I am not yet ready to embrace Halloween because that means I need to figure out what costumes my boys will be wearing. (Even if the stores already have some CHRISTMAS decorations out. Ridiculous!)

Super Bowl Dessert Ideas

Super Bowl Dessert Ideas

I wish I'd prepared a big spread of Super Bowl Desserts for you today. Well, I kind of have... in a roundabout way. .

These guys are not too hard to make. All you need is cake, icing, chocolate and a little white chocolate.
You'll just have to pretend that the background has your favorite team's jerseys... instead of mine.

Take the cake pops off of their sticks and put them on cupcakes or cakes covered in grass, and you've got yourself a football field. (Click this link to my Grass, Bees & Ladybugs cupcakes to learn how to make the grass-covered cupcakes.)

You could also make some cookies or cake/cupcake decorations out of the team's logos using royal icing, like I did (with other drawings) in this tutorial.

And don't fret if you don't have the right cookie cutter, you can make your own cutters by following this tutorial.

Or there's always simple, like my New Year's Eve cookies. You could do something along these lines. They were REALLY easy to make. And fireworks are appropriate for a Super Bowl party, I think??

Sorry I didn't get a chance to whip up some fresh treats for you. I went on a trip with the family, and re-entry back home has been a bit rough. I have plans for two or three more fun ideas coming up, though, I promise. So, stay tuned!

Do you have a treat you just have to serve at your Super Bowl get together? Tell me about it  - or link to it in the comments section below!
