I was very excited when a woman asked me to make cake pops for a baby shower for twin baby boys. (I have twin boys... who are decidedly
not babies anymore. They are almost five, after all.)
What You Need: Cake Balls (See my tutorial here on

Light Blue Candy Melts
White Candy Melts
Vegetable Oil
Lollipop Sticks
Optional: Sprinkles Squeeze Bottles (see below for specific product information) Heating Pad Cooler Pack Mini Treat Bags Ribbon (to tie bags) This photo shows you how I lay out my workspace... just what I do. I use the heating pad to keep the candy melts warm. If I'm using it to actually melt the candy, I set it on high. Otherwise, I use medium or low settings. I use the cooler pack under the plate to keep the cake balls cool before I dip them. It's helpful, especially on warm days (as this one was).
Start by melting the candy in a bowl or mug. I prefer these tall mugs (which I bought from WalMart).
Add 1 Tbsp. of oil, and as much of the bag of melts as fits in your bowl or mug. Microwave it on 30% power for 30-seconds to 1-minute at a time. Stirring every time.
Then, you'll dip your lollipop stick into the melted candy.
Insert the stick about halfway into the cake ball.

Dip the cake pop into the melted candy, remembering not to swirl or twirl it. You want to dip it far enough to cover the pop- lean it side to side if necessary, and pull it out. Quickly so that the ball doesn't fall off of the stick.
Tap the cake pop gently by the stick on the edge of the mug to remove the excess candy. (I usually tap them about 10 times or so.)
Notice the angle that I tap the pops. It helps to keep that cake ball from falling off of the stick.
Insert the sticks into a sheet or disk of styrofoam unti the candy sets. If you're going to use sprinkles, add them immediately after dipping the pop. The candy sets up super fast, so you have to sprinkle them immediately.
To decorate, I used a small squeeze bottle fitted with a coupler ring and a tip #1. This allowed me to get thin enough lines to write. The lines that came out of the bottle's original nozzle were way too fat. (The "mini" bottles are the ones that fit the couplers, and even then, only some coupler rings threaded.)
I drizzled some, wrote on some, and used sprinkles on some. A variety for two sweet baby boys-to-be.
